Explaining Software as a Service

Training on a laptop with Software as a Service

Software as a service (or SaaS) is a way of delivering applications over the Internet-as a service. Instead of installing and maintaining software, you can simply access it via the Internet, freeing yourself from complex software and hardware management.

SaaS applications are sometimes called Web-based software, on-demand software, or hosted software. Whatever the name, SaaS applications run on a SaaS provider’s servers. The provider manages access to the application, including security, availability, and performance.

The infrastructure required to run the type of software is significant, and often based on service oriented architecture (SOA). This type of structure creates packages for different functionality as interoperable services or modules. Each client is free to activate the different services and expand its toolkit based on its own needs and schedule (in our case – current RedSeed programmes or bespoke programmes). The design ensures that each module functions as an independent unit, while integrating with the other aspects of the software (e.g. reporting).
