Have you ever hear the expression ‘you don’t know what you don’t know’? Education is a double-edged sword in that it can both add to and build a person’s knowledge while at the same time systematically undermining it by highlighting opportunities for growth that they didn’t necessarily know were there to start with. The fourth benefit to implementing training in an organisation is that ‘failure’, in the traditional sense, becomes the baseline from which learning can be measured; flipping the negative connotations of assessment (i.e. criticism) on its head to become a positive benchmarking tool. When the learning environment is safe (which I recognise that as a topic is a blog entry in itself) and assessment not only measures the effect of training within a business but also discreetly nurtures a culture of resilience and openness. As mentioned above, training’s osmosis will have farther-reaching effects that extend beyond training, perhaps even impacting staff’s resilience to change. Think about the benefit to any business where their team is collectively open to feedback, is more agile, and more accepting of change and behavioural alignment. A fluid and resilient team will be more motivated, less likely to want to leave, and become better brand ambassadors for your business, making training, assessment and coaching a no-brainer in any organisation.
